The splendid Golden Gate, which have no exact equivalent in mediaeval European architecture, is the unique example of Russian fortification architecture too. Although it was originally built in 1164 as a defensive structure, The Golden Gate also served as a triumphal arch.

Rostov Kremlin

The Rostov Kremlin, standing on shore of Lake Nero, is one of the most fascinating wall complexes in Russia. It is divided into three parts: Cathedral square, Bishop's court and Metropolitan's garden. The dominant of the ensemble is the splendid Assumption Cathedral, which is the oldest architectural construction in Rostov.
